Helpful Cocktail Tips

Stress Free Party!

Chips and dips. Disposable snack plates. Paper towels.  Solo cups and a bar with all that your guests will need to make their own drinks. Ice!

DRINK RESPONSIBLY!

Everybody Sangria!

Not every party has to have a full liquor bar to be successful!  Try making two or three different Sangria recipes for your guests to enjoy!  They are totally delicious and are known to quench thirsts with their chilled fruity components.  Check out the many recipes online that suit your tastes.  The secret to serving Sangria as the beverage of choice at your party is to make enough ahead of time, keep it refrigerated to make it super chilled, and only add the ice right before you pitcher it up!

DRINK RESPONSIBLY!

Create an Orange Rose

or a Lemon, Lime, Kumquat, Apple, Pear, Peach for that matter!  As long as you can peel one long peel you have it made.  Make a "bunch" of they for a beautiful display in a punch bowl, or individually for a cocktail!  I have one suggestion.  When you have your rose shaped exactly as you want it, stick a tookpick through the bottom layers to help hold its shape!

Follow the simple "how to" video below when making your "rose"

DRINK RESPONSIBLY

DYI Photo Booth!

Living in a Digital era has its advantages.  Pick an area around your party that best suits your party theme, for instance, by a palm tree for a tropical party, or as nuetral an area as you can, a painted block wall in your patio for instance.  Have your digital camera or phone set on a table nearby and either take a picture of all your guests as they come in or sometime during the party.  You friends can help you do this too!  Make sure to have everybody's email (have a clipboard and pen handy), or a method to send them pictures.  Go online and find a free app that will help you build a background and fun images to insert around each guest!  Have fun with it and when you are done, send them out individually, digitally of course, or send everyone all your friends fun pictures to share in the fun!

DRINK RESPONSIBLY

What? NO Pool!

Not everyone had a pool growing up, but the one thing most of us did have was a sprinkler...and man did we have fun.  Why would it be any different today? Have a sprinkler set up in your yard for your guest to run through to cool off and just have fun!  I wonder how many of your guests are going to revert to being twelve again?  Do the responsible thing and walk your yard to remove any possible hazzards, rocks, sticks, glass etc.  HEY wait a minute,  I have two words, Slipin' Slide!

DRINK RESPONSIBLY

Such a Simple Thing!

Keep a clean hammer or meat mallet handy to break up that ice......Ice pick's give me the willies and I would rather smash a thumb then pierce my hand with what is most likely not a surgically clean big needle LOL!

DRINK RESPONSIBLY

Safety First

You should have a First Aid Kit in your home regardless, but most certainly if you are throwing a party!  It can be as simple as going online to find a list of what to have in a first aid kit, seeing what you have and buying what you need and throwing it all in to a container.  Other wise, you can make a trip to any drugstore, Big Box store or even a food store, and pick up a ready to go first aid kit.  As the saying goes, "better safe than sorry".

DRINK RESPONSIBLY!

Lighten UP...Don't Laugh

With the heat soaring to near 100 degrees, make sure to have non-alcoholic alternative drinks for your guests to quench their thirsts!  Nothing worse than downing a cocktail because you are hot and sticky and feeling dehydrated and then have it hit your tummy......yuck!  Think flavored waters and how about an oldie but a goodie...Wine Sprtizers!  Some alcohol to make them feel grown up, fruity, zesty, bright and bubbly, the spritzer that is, but hey if it fits it fits LOL!

DRINK RESPONSIBLY

Boozy Popsicles

These boozy pops were a huge trend last summer with a 68% increase in internet recipe searches....Perfect for a summer party! If you can make a cocktail, you can make a prodigiously delicous popsicle!

Height of Cherry Season!

With cherries at the height of season, so are their flavor!  Watch for sales at your grocer and try cherries right from the tree....I think you will be pleasantly surprised....and everyone loves a cherry.....in their drink!

DRINK RESPONSIBLY

Extend That Shade!

If you don't have enough shade for your guest to take advantage of at your pool party...Set Something Up!  This could take many forms. A rented tent, a canopy bought from a big box store, a piece of light fabric or plastic with gromets in each corner allowing you to sting it up almost anywhere...What ever you decide, it will be something that you will use over and over and over again!

DRINK RESPONSIBLY

Save Some Time and Chill Some Glasses Ahead of Time!

It's not rocket science, but man it helps!  Typically with mixed cocktails at your home party, the glasses will for the most part, all the same so...when making one cocktail, go ahead and fill not only the mixing glass with ice, but a few glasses at the same time.  This will save you a little time and most of all, chill down those glasses helping keep your guests cocktails colder a littl bit longer.  Now, here comes the tough part.  You have to gauge how many and how fast you will be making cocktails, otherwise you will be pouring out water from the melted ice...which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but who wants watered down cocktails???

DRINK RESPONSIBLY!

Freshen It Up A Bit!

Take a quick look at your patio furniture.  Unless you recently bought it, I bet it's looking a little "tired"  Head to the store and buy an outdoor spray paint formulated for the material your set is made of.  Spray away applying a few coats allowing dry time in between!  You will be amazed how great your set will look again!  Now about those cushions.  Flip them over for a bright new vibrancy and if you have already done this so both sides are faded....remember that antique finished fabrics, particularly on patio furniture cushions is in!

Don't Be A Hero!

Use A Bar Towel!

There are bottled beers that of course, have twist tops.  Don't be a hero, a tough guy, use a towel to twist off those tops.  Nothing's worse than slicing your hand on a twist top to have it further aggrivated by taking more twist tops off, the stinging from citurs wheels, and off course alcohol! If you do by chance slice your hand, use that first aid kit you are supposed to have handy.  Wash the cut thoroughly, put an antibiotic and water proof band aid on.  Please dont reuse that bloody towel....get rid of it and start fresh!  You now can regale your guests with the wonderous tale of the twist off top and how you conquered it with one hand tied behind your back!

DRINK RESPONSIBLY!

Club Soda and Cocktails

When mixing a cocktail that calls for Club Soda, mix the cocktail first, pour the drink into your carefully chosen glass with ice,  then top off with the club soda.  This maintains the carbonation (fizziness)

DRINK RESPONSIBLY!

Club Soda Fizzines!

....Or for that matter, anything with carbonation! It is scientifically proven that your soda water, tonic water, or other flavored carbonated beverages will stay fizzier longer if refrigerated as opposed to being kept in the pantry for instance. It has to with solubility, temperature and how it affects different atoms...So, for the freshest carbonated beverages, Keep Them Refrigerated!

DRINK RESPONSIBLY!

Bar Towels

(Great Tips are Always Worth Repeating!)

It's always a great idea to have plenty of bar towels on hand to pick up messy spills, wipe down surfaces and of course, buff up those cocktail glass till they shine like the top of the Chrysler Building!  I find that all cotton is most absorbent and I when I can, I purchase all white towels so that when I add a little bleach in the wash, they come out impeccably clean!

Garnishes

Garnishes should be little more than decoration for your drinks. At times, they can add a bit of flavor as well, but their primary purpose is ornamental. While you can skip the garnishes at home, it is a nice touch if you are entertaining, so it's a good idea to practice up.

Not Sure What Wine To Buy?

Yeah, I am sure that what you like everyoe else will as well, but just in case, ask the associate at a wine store for suggestions on best sellers!

Just in Case!

Always be ahead of the game and make sure your guests are having a great time....just not that much of a great time!  Have on hand the telephone numbers of local taxi services and the websites of Uber drivers to help your friend get home that shouldn't be driving home.  You may even have a designated non-drinker at your party who would volunteer to take someone home in case they imbibed too much.  There are some communities where they offer free taxi rides home on holidays to prevent driving accidents.  Check it out!

Is There a Certain Order for Pouring Cocktail Ingredients?

Spirits First

This practice is more common today, and it's how most build the majority of cocktails. You start with the spirit then add liqueurs, mixers, and enhancers on top of it. The advantage to this is that you can gauge your ratios based on how large or small you poured the liquor, which is the base, the foundation, of your cocktail.

If you overpour the Scotch for a Rob Roy you can easily balance it out with a little more sweet vermouth and have a nice drink that may produce some waste but is still well formed. Likewise, if your customer wants a "light" Cosmo, underpour the vodka and add more cranberry or orange liqueur to compensate for the volume. Starting with the spirit allows you to gauge and adapt the drink to miss pours and to individual's tastes.

Strong (your base ingredient)

Enhancers (dashes)

Mixers (sweets, sours, juices, etc.)

Toppers (sodas, champagne, and other sparkling mixers)

In This Case, Two or Three is Better Than One!

Like most of us, not many have a wet bar with a bar sink right there to rinse out cocktail shakers and more.  In this case, having two or three cocktail shakers on hand makes for better utilization of time, not having to run back and forth to the kitchen, but also, keeps the integrity of the cocktail you are making.  It wouldn't do to have two different cocktails fighting each other in your guests glass!

 Serve With Style

Leave the red Solo cups for your next barbecue, and opt for appropriately shaped cocktail and wineglasses instead. If you’re hosting a small group and don’t want to buy new glassware, adjust your cocktail menu to fit the kinds of glasses you have. There’s just something awkward about sipping a martini from a wineglass. And there’s no shame in opting for plastic to avoid washing dishes all night. Clear plastic rocks glasses can accommodate a variety of libations, from

margaritas to wine.

Stocking Your Bar

It doesn’t take a great many bottles to build a bar capable of tackling most of the classic cocktail formulas. But, to begin with, you’ll just need a bottle each of gin, vodka, light rum, tequila, bourbon, rye, blended Scotch, brandy, dry white vermouth, sweet red vermouth, a few essential liqueurs and a handful of bitters. As you grow more ambitious, you can always add to your stock. Making simple syrup is, yes, simple, and you should keep it on hand too.

DRINK RESPONSIBLY!

Please Don’t Stop The Music

Seriously, don’t. Music is another one of those seemingly obvious details that can really set the tone of a party. Avoid awkward silences and keep your guests on their feet by setting up a playlist of tunes beforehand. Try letting your guests take turns being DJ for an eclectic mix of tunes that satisfy everyone’s tastes.

How to Make Jalepeno Tequila!

(and Vodka too)

10 oz Tequila

1 Large Jalapeño

Thinly slice jalapeños and drop into bottom of glass bottle. Pour in the tequila. Close bottle and allow to infuse for at least 24 hours. Shake periodically. Once infused, strain to remove jalapeño and reseal.

DRINK RESPONSIBLY!

Garnishes Ready?

Before your cocktail party starts, have your garnishes ready to go! Pre slice and or quarter your fruits and citruses.  Have your cocktail onions, olives, cherries and all the other garnishes that you anticipate your guests will want all prepared ahead of time.  Keep them iced and have a few in thier "original state" just in case you want to look like the best host ever by creating their drinks garnish right there and then!  Impressive......The idea is to make their cocktail and get them back to the party as quickly as possible. With the line that is going to form at the bar....you will be glad you did!

Use a Grapefruit Quarter Slice or Twist

Grapefruit is an overlooked cocktail garnish. I like a twist with my martinis and a half-moon slice with my margaritas. It adds an alluring perfume without lemon’s acidity.

Sparkling Glasses

A simple dish rag or towel with a few tablespoons of white vinegar on it is all you need to make your glasses sparkle. It will evaporate and leave you without any taste, but if you're still worried you can fill a shallow pan or plastic dish tub with hot water and add 2 cups of vinegar to it. Give things a soak, shake off excess water and let sit to dry. Or, if you have a dishwasher, you can add straight vinegar to the rinse aid compartment for an added boost.

Time to Enjoy a Different Cherry!

Head to your local gourmet store or liquor store and take a look at how many different flavors of cherries there are...You will be amazed.  It's like there are just as many different flavored cherries as there stuffed olives!  When you see each flavor I am sure certain cocktails will come right to mind right away!  Not only do they add flavor, but the different colors really add something extra to your cocktail.

Buy TOO Much?

Let's face it.  Most of us have friends over for cocktails and the depth of our liquor cabinets it generally limited to vodka, rum, bourbon and maybe a couple of fun bottles for shots.  When giving a party, it can be difficult to determine exactly (or close to) what you will need.  There are liquor store chains (TW&M) that will take back unopened beer, wine and liquor (see store online site for details or of coure call).  If you aren't fortunate enough to have one of these stores around, develop a relationship with the liquor store you do frequent. Don't just merely flip over the credit car to pay, but take time to engage in a little friendly conversation.  First off, it's the nice thing to do, but knowing you, they may let you return what you did not use at your party.

Bartender and Tip Jars

This is totally up to you as the Host, but talk to your bartender about his fee and how to handle his renumeration which would include tips.  If you prefer that they not take tips (or have a tip jar out), then you should compensate him accordingly. Typically $1 to $2 for each cocktail that they make for your guests is customary.  Again, talk to your bartender and come to an agreeable arrangement.  If you agree that they not take tips, then when offered one, the bartender can politely decline.  If a guest insists, let them keep it and don't be that kind of host that deducts it from their pay......Now you wouldn't do that would you?...I didn't think so!

"Play Games...All Sorts"

This isn't a game that Mary Poppins played with Michael or Jane....but if they could have, they would have!  Keep things moving along at your cocktail party by inviting your guests to play!  WARNING:  Your cocktail party may go a little bit longer than planned.  This game is addicting!

Heads Up!

Follow the link to a YouTube video by Ellen DeGeneres on how to play!

Fan Out Your Napkins!

Be kind and thoughtful to your guest as well as yourself and your bartender.  Fan ou or separate your  napkins so that they are easily picked up without having to handle several napkins underneath.  It keeps things easy and clean!

The Chill

Don't overlook this crucial element of a craft cocktail. Chill that glass and do it right!  Follow this link for a "How To" video.

Easy Access

Don't make your guests wait at the bar set up for a non-alcoholic beverage.  Have a galvanized tub for instance set up, filled with ice, sodas, waters, beer and even wines.  This will give you more time to create those delicious cocktails for your friends, but it also lets your guest grab something that is ready to go!

Outdoor Torches

Outdoor torches can help set a mood for your party.  There are all kinds of designs to coordinate with your theme from the very modern to the well known tiki torch.  There are those with stands/stakes where you can postition them throughout your yard or those that sit nicely on table tops, walls or steps. How about a combination of both? The idea is that they add to the ambiance, create a beautiful, complimentary soft light, and can be lit with fuels that give off fragrances to, and most important I think, insect repellent.  What could be bad?  Use common sense of course and safety first.  Make sure that where ever you place them, they have total clearance not only around the sides but the top...think canopy's an tents....

Keep It Simple

Caprese Skewers

On the way home from work, stop at the grocers and buy cherry tomatoes, both red and yellow, mozzarella balls, fresh basil and 4 inch bamboo skewers.  Rinse all the tomatoes off, paper towel dry and skewer along with the mozarella balls adding a smal piece of torn basil in between each item.  Brush lightly with a light olive oil , salt and garlic dressing (or use pre-made Italian dressing).  Chill and serve!

Spicy or Not!

When you plan to have Bloody Mary's at your cocktail party or for brunch, remember not everyone loves spicy, so have one pitcher of spicy Bloody Mary mix ready to go and one that is mild!.  That way you can offer your guests their cocktails exactly as the prefer them!

Combined Your Resources!

Get hold of your best friend, or two or three and throw a great cocktail party together!  I know so many times when we plan a party that "WE", meaning ourselves and our bf's, partners or husbands, do it all alone.  Not because we think we are singularly the best thing going, we just get into that mode and go....A team effort will help with great ideas, locales, reduce costs and most of all, the work load! The biggest road block will be picking a day when all of you are available for the party....NO one is that important or busy that you can't set aside a Saturday or Sunday to have a wonderful time with friends!  P.S.  It does help to pick two or three of your best friends  LOL!

Everyone's Playlist!

When you send out your invitations, either hand written and mailed or e-vites,  ask your guests to email  you back with their favorite artist, band, group or type of music.  When you get your list together, compile a playlist including all of your guests favorites and play them during the party! They will definitely enjoy listening to music that they like and are familiar with as well as thinking how thoughtful of a host you are!

Buy Maraschino Cherries With Their Stems On!

So much better for your guests drinking the cocktail and they definitely can add a little fun to the party!  We have all been there and you know what I am talking about.  The stem is much easier to grab onto rather trying to stab at it with that bendable cocktail straw...and btw, how many knots can you tie in one stem?

for Great Cocktail recipes!

There's a Tool For Every Job!

Get a load of this one...Perfect for retrieving olives out of the jar, and we all know what a pain that is!  The big plus about this bar tool is that is leave all that delicious olive juice behind in the jar to be used later in a "dirty" martini, but it also makes for a nicer presentation without all the holes from the fork tines trying to get it out of the jar!

Cocktail Onions

The lonely and misunderstood

A cocktail onion is usually a pearl onion pickled in a brine with small amounts of turmeric and paprika. Pearl onions are naturally sweet, which makes them an excellent pairing with many cocktails.  With all that being said, if you check out the many different flavors of cocktail onions as your local liquor store, like stuffed olives, you will be amazed at how many variations there are.....Explore, be adventurous and try them all!  P.S.  There are all kinds of recipes online showing you how to make your own cocktail onions.

Keep It Clean Part 1, 2, 3.....

Just as a simple reminder, bleach really doesn't smell that great and certainly not at your cocktail party. But, with that being said, it does help  keep things stay clean and santized. The perfect solution for sanitizing surface (bar tops and tables) is 2 teaspoons of bleach in 1 gallon of water.  Now here is the hint...Use a fragranced bleach to keeps things pleasant for your guests!  Choose from lemon, linen, springtime fresh, and an assortment of florals.

Recover

There are a few things you can do to make cleaning up after your party a breeze.  Start with an impecably clean home or party space, that way all you have to clean up is what's left from the party.  Always have your dishwasher empty and ready to go for all those dishes and glasses. Make sure that your garbage cans are empty ready to take the trash bags from clean up.  It's much easier to fill a garbage bag in a container than continually opening it up to throw trash in.  Have take out boxes ready so your guests can take home the left over delicious foods you served.  The less food you have left, the easier the clean up the less time spent in wrapping them up for the fridge.  And last but not least, clean up your home or party space before you go to bed.  It's much easier to clean with a slight buzz then with a hangover!  Crank the tunes back up and before you know it, you will be done.  That way you can go to bed without the thought of having to face the clean up in the morning!

Have a Smoking Area for Your Guests

You can let your guests know that you have set up a smoking area for them by either telling them or having an obvious absence of ash trays except for the designated smoking area.  Don't be rude about it, don't be coy either...Be polite. Typically, unless you also smoke and allow smoking in your house, most smokers smoke outside in todays' times.  Have the same ambiance lighting, party decor and snacks available to them as you do all of your guests in your home. Think ahead and have an alternative area ready if the weather outside doesn't cooperate.

Disposable Plastic Ware!

Not Your Parent's Solo Cup!

I know we have talked about disposables but did you know you can buy them in shapes like these?  They are available in limited colors, like red and crystal  lol  But talk about fun!

How to Pour a Layered Cocktail

Layered cocktails taste good, look amazing and impress anyone who sees you successfully pouring them. They’re typically associated with sweet liqueurs, but plenty of layered cocktail recipes use rum, whiskey, vodka and other hard liquors to cut the sweetness and add some kick. Whether your style is “cin-cin” or “chug chug,” there’s a layered cocktail out there for you.

All you really need for this is a spoon. But if your bottles are very full, cocktail pourers can help you pour them slow and steady.

Now for the step-by-step:

  • Figure out the specific gravity of each of the ingredients in your drink. Recipes sometimes contain this information. You may need to research online or just experiment. .

  • Sort out your ingredients in terms of heaviness, so you can pour them in from heaviest to lightest.

  • Pour the heaviest liquor or liqueur into a shot glass or cordial glass (or whatever you prefer – the broader the glass is the less noticeable the layers will probably be). Try not to get any up on the sides – pour straight down into the center of the glass.

  • Turn a spoon upside down. Place it inside the glass, with the tip of the spoon against the inside edge of the glass, above the first layer and not touching it. (Some online sources say it should be right at the top of the first layer, or even down in it a little – for me, having it above the others worked best, but it may depend on your style and/or the exact liqueurs you’re working with.)

  •  Pour the next heaviest liqueur as slowly as possible over the back of the spoon, moving the spoon up as the level of ingredients rises (keep it above the ingredients). It’s easier to do this with a bottle that’s half full (or less) rather than one that’s nearly full, so you may need to pour some of the liquor or liqueur into another container. Pour from the opposite side of where you’re holding the spoon (see picture). If the two ingredients mix up a little bit, give them a few seconds to settle, and they should separate nicely.

  • Repeat the process with the third layer, continuing to raise the spoon as you pour. Bring it as close as you dare to the top (you can always wipe off any spillage on the outside of the glass). As you get closer to the rim of the glass, you can move the spoon just a few millimeters away from the edge of the glass and continue to pour over it – that gives the liqueur plenty of room to land in the glass without landing too heavily. (Besides, the further along you get in that layer, the less danger there is of disturbing the one beneath it.)

  • Your finished result is three (or more, for the daring) distinct layers in different colors. Of course, this means you need to pick ingredients that aren’t too close in color if they’re next to each other (unless that’s what you want). This is an extremely artistic approach to cocktail pouring, and there’s no end to what you can come up with.

      Cheers!

Maximize Conversation at the Table

Using place cards, seat the best listeners next to the best talkers.

Outdoor Party Lighting

It doesn't have to be a lighting display to challenge Disney and with a little thought you can achieve spectacular results and spend very little money! Pull out that box of Christmas lights....that's right, Christmas lights.  You already have  them so why not use them!. You can always find inexpensive (almost throw away) lights at hardware stores for instance and certainly online.  You don't have to light every square inch of your space either.  Step back and look at your party area from a slight distance.  Pick out a few spots in your yard or patio that will look great lit up. Think available power supply.  If running extension cords, make sure they are safe and not unsightly. How about battery operated lights?  If you go twinkle (steady on please)lights or something a little more industrial, lighting will help set the mood...and btw, maybe couple of those areas could be the food table and bar!

Fan Out Your Napkins!

Be kind and thoughtful to your guest as well as yourself and your bartender.  Fan ou or separate your  napkins so that they are easily picked up without having to handle several napkins underneath.  It keeps things easy and clean!

Make Almost any Cocktail a Frozen Cocktail!

Mix your cocktail as you normally would except leave out the alcohol.  Freeze in a container or ice cube trays.  Add the frozen mixture to your blender and add the alcohol and there you have it! Frozen cocktails!

Helpful Hints for a Great Party

Make sure you have all of the essential bar tools.

Send invitations early, but not too early, 2-3 weeks should be sufficient unless it's a busy time of year like November and December.

Get food pairing suggestions.  Google is a great tool for this!

Have plenty of cocktail napkins, plates and glasses available.

Plan on 50-75% of invited guests to attend to estimate the number of drinks you'll be pouring and how many bottles you'll need.

Estimate 2-3 drinks per person.

Add a "WOW" factor. This could be a drink, garnish, food dish, activity, display or whatever fits your party.

The After-Party

If all goes well during the party, keep it going! As people pick up and leave, your closest friends will likely stay behind. Have some delicious desserts (Not served earlier) and coffee on hand for the after-party stragglers. You guys can laugh about the shenanigans that just went down.  Perfect way to wind down.

Party in a Box!

No time to plan a party or shop?  Stop by your grocers or liquor store and pick up cocktails to go in bottles or boxes.  Just add friends, food and music.  It's a party!

DRINK RESPONSIBLY

Bring the Outdoors "IN" for Your Next Cocktail Party!

There is no reason to spend a lot of money on your next parties decor.  Take a few minutes and look around your yard, community and undeveloped land to see if you can cut flowers, greenery and more to bring inside! It can be as grand as large palm fronds adoring your walls and in larger arrangements or something as simple as local flora and fauna in a vase placed strategically around your party area!  I wouldn't suggest running up to a neighbors yard, park, hotel or business to cut what you need....but you can always ask first and see what they say! Otherwise, stick with the safety and familiarity of your yard and near by undeveloped land.  Use that God given gene and be creative!

Everyone's Playlist!

Worth Repeating!

Bamboo Straws

Think out of the box and introduce something special to your tropical cocktails!  Paper and or real bamboo  straws ....it's up to you and what you would like to spend.  Remember, the straws made of real bamboo can last for years!

Sometimes Silly and Fun are Just what Your Party Needs!

Have a little fun!  Add some whimsy to your party.  No matter if it's a black tie event or an afternoon pool party, have some fun! Try giving out, and making your guests wear, glow in the day and night necklaces and bracelets.....A definite ice breaker and a totally great way to create that  "fun" atmosphere!

Have the same ambience lighting, party decor and snacks available to them as you do all of your guests in your home. Think ahead and have an alternative area ready if the weather outside doesn't cooperate.

Have the Totally Unexpected!

This idea will fit into almost any cocktail party theme....and if it doesn't....make it fit!  Have mini Hibatchis set up on tables with an iced selection of meats, vegetables and fruits for your guests to grill!  Have marinated meats, little chunks of steaks, chicken, pork.  How about shrimp and lobster pieces or scallops? Mushrooms, bell peppers, pineable chunks....you get the idea, all served with dipping sauces, savory, sweet and firery! Have you ever been to a cocktail party where they did this? There ya go!

Use Disposables!

This may be the true of almost anything you use at your cocktail party.  Plates, napkins, glasses, silverware.  But in this case we are talking about chaffing dishes.  Depending on what you prefer, you will find that buying disposable chaffing dishes from a party store or a big box like Sam's BJ's or Costco, may work out best for you! They are less expensive than renting from a rental company plus the bonus of not having to take them back.  Not fancy enough?  Depending on what you are serving in the chaffing dish, often you can drape a large white dinner napkin over the edges (and sometimes under the food) to hide the crinkled aluminum pan.  Next time you are in the store, take a look...and btw, they are reusable!

You Have Heard of Small Plates?  Well We're Talking Small Tables!

Not too expensive, stackable or with removable legs.  Perfect for placing where your guests will congregate to socialize.  A place for them to set cocktails and food. They come in a few different sizes.  Pick the one that suits you best!

Take Control of the Volume!

You have been there...either the host or a guest turns up the volume of the music sooo loud that you can't hear yourself think let alone the conversation you were having with another guest.   This is bad on a many levels.  First, you are more than likely bothering your neighbors. Second, you are ruining congenial conversations that are going on...and goodness knows with all the social media we are exposed to, the art of conversation is already being assailed.  Third, overly loud music really only appeals to just a few, if any of your guests, so think of their comfort and enjoyment.  You may want to adjust the volume as more guests arrive because general conversation will add to the natural noise level, but the music should, at any given time, be background and just audible enough to set and keep the mood you want your party to have.

Bring Your Own Food

Bring Your Own Booze

We are all friends here.  Don't let the cost of having an impromptu cocktail party stop you from having one....Get all your friends together at the last minute when the mood strikes, the weather is perfect and you feel like having some fun! I think you can ask your friends to either bring liquor or food.  You can ask some of your friends to bring food and others, the liqor, but not both, and there you have it, a cocktail party! Traditionally if you are asking for BYOB then you are bound by etiqutte to supply the food and something more than chips and dips.  That has changed, times have changed, but good times with friends have not. Provide a fun atmosphere, great music and the right mix of friends and no one will mind bringing something along for the party!

Roll That Citrus!

Everyone wants more juice! Grab that lemon or lime and roll the hell out of it using your palm and counter top.  You will double the amount of juice you get out of it...and after all, isn't that the point!
