The Hacked Greyhound Martini!

There’s something about the warm summer nights that makes a fresh, citrus-y drink a necessary accessory.  Maybe it’s because the sun stays out until deep into the evening. Maybe it’s because the weather is warm, and grapefruit is so refreshing. Or maybe it’s the vodka. Summer and vodka are a beautiful couple.

1/2 oz lemongrass simple syrup

Dash of grapefruit bitters

Salt or sugar for glass rimming

Tequila Sunrise

The Tequila Sunrise, with it’s bright striations of color, evokes a summer sunrise. This simple classic has only three ingredients—tequila, grenadine and orange juice—and is served unmixed to preserve the color of each layer.  The Tequila Sunrise achieved notoriety after Mick Jagger began drinking it, and The Rolling Stones dubbed their 1972 tour “the cocaine and Tequila Sunrise tour.” The drink has been a part of the cocktail canon ever since.

Mr. Hyde Potion

This spirited Halloween drink might just be a life-changing experience. The potion is full of herbaceous flavors and a kick that will bring out the party monster in your guests.

Makes 4 Cocktails

8 ounces vodka

4 ounces parfait amour liqueur

1 ounce blackberry liqueur

2 ounces tarragon simple syrup (recipe follows)

1 ounce fresh lemon juice

1 ounce lavender syrup, available at most liquor stores

4 lavender sprigs

8 blackberries

dry ice (optional)

Note: Always observe dry ice safety measures: Never touch dry ice with bare skin and do not swallow.  Only drink the cocktail when the dry ice has melted completely!

Purple sanding sugar for rim (optional: mix sugar with purple food coloring)

Prepare the tarragon simple syrup by placing 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan.

Heat over medium-low heat until it reaches a low boil. Add two sprigs of fresh tarragon and reduce heat to low. Heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove tarragon and allow syrup to cool.

Place 2 blackberries on each lavender sprig and set aside. Tip: For best results, insert a toothpick through blackberry first to make a small hole for the lavender stem.

Cut and juice lemon. Strain to remove pulp, if desired. Add spirits, syrups and juice to a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake until very cold (about 20 seconds).

Pour drink into beakers, add a small piece of dry ice (optional) and a lavender-blackberry skewer. Note: Drink is safe to consume only after dry ice has completely dissolved and the smoking has stopped.

Alternatively: Moisten the rim of a cocktail glass and dip in purple sanding sugar. Add cocktail and a small piece of dry ice. Lay lavender-blackberry skewer across the top of the glass and serve.

Sazerac

The Sazerac is often referred to as the oldest American cocktail dating back to the pre-Civil War era. It has seen its share of changes, including the substitution of anise flavored spirits when absinthe was banned in the US in 1912. Because of that, you may see some variation in recipes, but the basics remain.  Even with the right ingredients, many people struggle with the perfect Sazerac. Much of it has to do with the preparation. Be sure to just coat the inside of the glass with the Pernod or absinthe. Don't over pour... and don't forget to rub the rim of the glass with the lemon peel. It really makes a difference.

1 dash of Pernod

1 dash of Angustora bitters

2 dashes Peychaud's bitters

2 oz. Rye whiskey

2 Sugar cubes

Lemon Peel

Garnish: Lemon peel

Glass:  Double Old Fashioned

Hot Buttered Rum

Hot Buttered Rum is a warm, soothing cocktail that hits the spot when a chill is in the air. Adding butter to a cocktail may seem a little out of the ordinary, but the pat of butter imparts a richness to the Hot Buttered Rum that would otherwise be missing. While many recipes call for a simple pat of butter to be added to the cocktail, this version instead calls for butter batter, which tends to make it creamier and avoids the oil slick that generally forms on top.

1 tbsp Hot buttered rum batter (see recipe below)*

Boiling water
